Academic Diving Program Coordinator

The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory invites applications for the position of Coordinator of the Academic Diving Program (ADP), a non-tenure track faculty line. The FSUCML is committed to building a research program focused on coastal and marine issues of ecological importance. Thus, we seek a highly motivated individual with strong leadership skills who can build the underwater research capabilities of the ADP while serving as the University Diving Officer. We are particularly interested in someone who can strengthen the technical support for underwater research conducted by the faculty. The successful candidate will be responsible for the conduct, training, and operational aspects of all diving-related research, for supervising the technical and instructional staff of the ADP; for coordinating teaching of diving related courses ranging from Introductory Compressed Diving to Science Diver Training, based on national certification standards, and provide support to faculty teaching other underwater courses. This person will also ensure compliance with dive safety regulations and dive planning guidelines following AAUS standards and applicable state and federal statutes, review Standard Operation Procedures; develop recommendations for all new or unique activities for review and consideration by the Diving Control Board; prepare reports of program activities; and develop budget projections to assure cost effectiveness of the program.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate shall hold an active Scientific Diver certification as defined by the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), be a full member of the AAUS, and be an active SCUBA instructor from an internationally-recognized certifying agency (e.g., NAUI, PADI, CMAS)
  • Post graduate degree in a field of underwater science strongly encouraged, or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and/or five years of related professional experience consisting of scientific diving experience with at least 2 years supervisory experience
  • Science diving experience in an academic setting is highly desirable, with significant experience in diving related safety, communicating with scientists, addressing dive equipment and ocean-related diving issues
  • Competence in compressed-gas technology, including repair, maintenance, and purchase of basic and advanced diving life-support and underwater-research equipment.
  • Competence in all forms of compressed-gas diving used at the time of employment
  • Background in computer management applications desirable
  • Demonstrated management skills and ability to supervise others as well as effective written and oral communications skills.
  • Competence in computer skills including word, excel, powerpoint, and others.
