Oyster Restoration Database

In partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts, ABSI has created an inventory of oyster restoration and related projects funded through the Deepwater Horizon settlement. This inventory is intended to serve as a foundation from which to develop guidance for future restoration projects to maximize their effectiveness.

Oyster habitat restoration uses a variety of materials, and projects have been funded by a wide range of entities. The results of these efforts are often not readily available, so it is challenging for practitioners to assess the most appropriate approach for their restoration goals and take advantage of lessons learned by others.

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) explosion in 2010 resulted in the largest environmental damage assessment in U.S. history. Many oyster restoration projects across the Gulf have been funded through the DWH settlement. In collaboration with The Pew Charitable Trusts, we created an inventory and synthesis of oyster restoration (and related) projects supported through the funding components of the DWH settlement. This inventory is intended to serve as a foundation from which to develop guidance for future restoration projects to maximize their effectiveness.
