The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) is located on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity one hour south of the FSU main campus in Tallahassee. This Coastal Relations Coordinator position is located in Eastpoint, Florida at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve

Responsibilities

This position creates and facilitates all K-12 educational programs that align with company mission and school curriculum. Creates and facilitates department outreach programs including:

Student/Formal Education: Assist with facilitating and designing K-12 education programs that align to school curriculum and Apalachicola NERR’s mission. Coordinate with FSU regarding delivery/facilitation of TOTE program. Look for opportunities to integrate FSU research/initiatives into K-12 programs.

Public/Informal Education: Recruit speakers and manage schedule for monthly outreach talks and other events. Assist with maintaining Nature Center attractions, including boardwalks, exhibits, and Bay Discovery Room. Assist roaming interpreter with visitors in the Nature Center.

Communications: Generate communications materials in written, audio, and video media, as well as social media content for the DEP social media accounts. Oversee the creation and publication of the OysterCatcher newsletter, and keep communications contact database up to date with new FOR members and other relevant contacts. Manage Apalachicola NERR presence on the DEP website and coordinate updates with FOR website, www.apalachicolareserve.com. Compile success stories from ANERR, NW Region AP, and Buffer staff to generate weekly reports to central Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection in Tallahassee, and participate in a weekly call with communications staff and Central RCP Office staff, relaying relevant updates and protocol changes with staff.

Coordinate with FSUCML on outreach activities. Operate ANERR vehicles and vessels as needed. Assist with ANERR efforts to plan, prepare, and respond to extreme weather events that impacts ANERR and regional facilities.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (in one of the physical, biological, environmental sciences, a closely related field, or degree in an applicable social science) and four years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to eight years.)

Ability to move/lift up to 25 lbs. carrying and lifting field equipment, displays for special events and education activities.

  • Experience in education or nature interpretation, teaching and public outreach.

  • Ability to meet physical requirements as determined by position.
  • Ability to move/lift up to 25 lbs. carrying and lifting field equipment, displays for special events and education activities.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including but not limited to the use of Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project planning, development, and evaluation.

Anticipated Salary Range

The anticipated starting salary for this position is in the mid $40,000’s, commensurate with education and experience.
