Marine Technician (OPS) - Job ID #57319

The Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks an enthusiastic technician with strong interests in oyster reef ecology to manage and lead field operations in the Apalachicola Bay and neighboring environs. This position will contribute to a long-term research project examining the health, and mapping a trajectory for recovery of the Apalachicola Bay ecosystem, with emphasis on oyster reefs. Data collection is mostly field-based. The FSUCML is located on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity. This position is based at the FSUCML, one hour south of FSU main campus in Tallahassee.  

Responsibilities

This position is funded through the Apalachicola Bay System Initiative grant (https://marinelab.fsu.edu/absi/) which conducts a variety of research projects in Apalachicola Bay and adjacent waters. The position reports to the senior technician and will assist in all aspects of ABSI research, including but not limited to:

  • Prepare for and participate in field work to monitor and conduct research on the ecology of the Apalachicola Bay System
  • Assist with sample processing for research on the ecology of the Apalachicola Bay System.     
  • Assist with instrument maintenance, calibration, deployment, and data recovery for the in situ water quality monitoring system of the research area
  • Assist with data collection, entry and quality control
  • Assist with preparation of materials for reports and outreach, including graphs, maps, text and other materials as needed
  • Participate in education and outreach as needed

Qualifications:

High school diploma/equivalency and two years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to two years. (Note: post-high school education may substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

  • Basic understanding of aquatic biology
  • Experience with basic laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of this position, such as bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, working outside in hot and cold environments. Field days can be long and tiring
  • Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Valid Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in relevant area.
  • Working knowledge of image analysis software, Geographic Information Systems and data entry and quality control
  • Familiarity with operating and/or working off small boats
  • SCUBA diving certification
  • Familiarity with estuarine ecosystems.

Schedule

The typical schedule will be Monday – Friday 8:00a to 5:00p, with occasional late afternoons during field season

Anticipated Salary Range

Hourly rate is $16.00-18.00, commensurate with experience.

Pay Plan This is an OPS/temporary position. The initial appointment will be for one year, with potential to renew contingent upon continued availability of funding, the needs of the University and satisfactory performance.
