Mechanical Trades Technician – Job Opening ID #55403

Responsibilities

Constructs, restores, or renovates buildings, including offices, housing and laboratories, dock, shops: fabricating tables, shelves, and lightroom remodeling, and designing tank stands and arrays for active lab setups. Assist in project planning estimates and strategies; also directly procures materials and tools when necessary.

Maintains FSUCML physical plant, routine maintenance and troubleshooting on HVAC systems, electrical systems, minor plumbing, and various mechanical or specialized items such as our tractor or immersed aquarium heaters and pumps. Additional responsibilities include maintaining and replacing lights and light fixtures throughout the site and continuing projects such as converting lighting to LED—maintenance of accurate records in general, including documenting repairs needed and completed for safe operations.

Some painting and drywall work will also be required involving patching drywall during repairs or modifications, painting interior individual rooms, and touching up exterior paint when needed.

Some dock maintenance or modifications to facilitate research may be required. 

Assists in special projects such as hurricane preparation, emergency repairs, emergency cleaning, and adjusting of machinery. 

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate directly with research faculty and graduate students to effectively support their lab and field research.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develops change or alternatives along with good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the job, including the ability to lift 50 lbs. and the ability to work off ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to occasionally work in close (tight) areas.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
  • Ability to use a computer for e-mail, searching, and ordering products.
  • Ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Ability to estimate costs of materials and equipment.
  • Ability to perform skilled cabinetry, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical HAVC, or other related trades work. Electrical to include wiring, repair, and some knowledge of codes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, and repair a variety of equipment and machinery used in the area of work.
  • Must have knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, garages, and other structures, including wall framing, concrete, and masonry work.
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination.
  • Must have knowledge of office practices, procedures, and etiquette, including meetings.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance principles, practices, and techniques.
  •  A valid State of Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: Candidate to hold a 25 or 100-ton USCG masters endorsement; skill in safely operating all FSUCML vehicles.

Anticipated Salary Range

Anticipated Salary Range of $35,000 - $43,000, commensurate with experience.

Considerations

This is a USPS (University Support Personnel System) position.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.

If not otherwise specified, schedule is M-F, 8-4:30.  Paid weekend and evening on call service on rotation with other FSUCML staff.
