Outreach and Education Coordinator - Job ID #51776-Closed

The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks an enthusiastic and motivated person to work closely with their staff and faculty to promote the FSUCML research and conservation accomplishments and support and develop educational programs. The Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) is a multidisciplinary project focused on understanding the decline of oyster populations in the Bay and creating a pathway to ecosystem recovery. The successful applicant will work with the ABSI team to promote their science, management and restoration goals, and to coordinate and engage in local community education and outreach. The FSUCML is located about 1 hour from Tallahassee main campus.  

Responsibilities

  • Website maintenance -- Updates website, posts news items and articles, creates new pages as needed.
  • Science communication -- Works with FSUCML and ABSI leadership and researchers to generate news articles and blogs. Coordinates with FSU Communications to promote the FSUCML and ABSI initiative. Communicates science to the public in-person and via social media, including serving as staff coordinator for communication between the ABSI Community Advisory Board and ABSI Leadership Team.
  • Social media -- Maintains Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media outlets.
  • Community outreach -- Organizes venues, notices, signage, printed media etc., for meetings and public workshops; organizes events such as the FSUCML annual Open House and ABSI Community Advisory Board meetings.
  • Education -- Organizes educational events for K-12 students from local communities at the FSUCML and elsewhere. Works with organizational partners to develop K-12 education programming for the ABSI initiative.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma/equivalent and four years of experience; or a Bachelor's degree or higher.  

  • The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, particularly related to the dissemination of complex information to the public.
  • Must be willing and physically able to go into the field, occasionally under rigorous conditions, to obtain interviews and other information
  • Experience with social media platforms. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Preferred

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field, or a degree in Marine Biology.
  • Experience with K-12 educational outreach, event organization and management.
  • Experience with website design.
