Hatchery Technician – Job Opening ID #56206

The Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks a Research Technician for the ABSI research hatchery. The FSUCML is located on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity and social and cultural history, known as the “Forgotten Coast.” The hatchery technician will be based at the FSUCML, one hour from the FSU main campus in Tallahassee. The MISSION of the FSUCML is to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research that contributes to solving ecological problems and providing the scientific foundation for informed policy decisions. The VISION for the FSUCML is to be an internationally recognized center for coastal and marine science, setting the agenda for research and education and remaining a trusted source for scientific advice.

Responsibilities

This position will contribute to a long-term research project examining the health and mapping a trajectory for recovery of oyster reefs in Apalachicola Bay. The hatchery will focus on the production of conditioning and spawning of adult oysters, larval culture and production of spat-on-shell and single sets for restoration and research. Note that this is not for commercial production.  This position will report to the ABSI Hatchery Manager and will be involved in all aspects of shellfish production (specifically the eastern oyster), including but not limited to:

  • Culturing multiple strains of micro-algae for feeding bivalves.
  • Conditioning and spawning of adult bivalves.
  • Rearing bivalve larvae to settlement.
  • Rearing bivalve juveniles.
  • Monitoring environmental conditions and water quality in the hatchery.
  • Helping to organize the facility, order supplies, and keep production records.
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment and facilities, such as air and water handling systems, lights, and data loggers.

Qualifications

High school diploma/equivalency and two years of experience. . (Note: post-high school education may substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)
  • Experience with basic laboratory equipment.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of this position, which include repeated bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing, working outside, and working in hot and cold environments.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Valid Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain.
  • Must have strong interests in shellfish husbandry.
