Marine Technician – Job ID# 50998
The Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks two marine technicians to help with various tasks associated with the ABSI project. The positions will contribute to a long-term research project examining the health and mapping a trajectory for recovery of oyster reefs in the Apalachicola Bay.
The FSUCML is located on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity and social and cultural history, known as the “Forgotten Coast.” The marine technicians will be based at the FSUCML in St Teresa, which is one hour south of the FSU main campus in Tallahassee, FL.
The MISSION of the FSUCML is to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research that contributes to solving ecological problems and providing the scientific foundation for informed policy decisions.
The VISION for the FSUCML is to be an internationally recognized center for coastal and marine science, setting the agenda for research and education and remaining a trusted source for scientific advice.
Responsibilities
The marine technicians will assist with the significant amount of field and laboratory work as well as office duties associated with the ABSI project, including, but not limited to:
- Assisting with various field work tasks, including loading and unloading field gear, and cleaning and maintaining equipment.
- Assisting with sample collections for monitoring and research objectives.
- Deployment, recovery and maintenance of in situ dataloggers.
- Laboratory processing various types of samples (invertebrates, fishes, sediment, etc.).
- Data processing and entry into Access database.
- Assisting with writing tasks (updating protocols, reports, science summaries for website).
The position will report to the ABSI Senior Marine Technician.
High school diploma/equivalency and two years of experience.
- Experience with basic field equipment and techniques (quadrats, transects, data collection, water samplers, environmental monitoring instruments).
- Experience with basic laboratory equipment (e.g., microscopes, balances, drying ovens).
- Working knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Office.
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with aquatic environments--most of the field work is from small boats.
- Willingness to work in estuarine environments in sometimes challenging conditions (hot, cold, muddy, buggy, choppy water).
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of this position, which include repeated bending, standing for long periods, lifting up to 40 lbs.
- Flexibility to work outside of normal working hours, if necessary.
- Valid Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain.
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science in relevant area.
- Experience with ArcGIS online, Access database, and/or R code.
- Experience with trailering and operation of small boats (<26 ft).
