The FSU Coastal & Marine Lab (FSUCML) seeks an OPS Algae Technician to support the production and maintenance of micro-algae used as feedstock for shellfish (primarily oysters) and other invertebrates at the FSUCML Research Hatchery. This role ensures a reliable and high-quality algae supply through precise culture management, strict hygiene practices, and collaboration with research staff.
Responsibilities
The FSU Coastal & Marine Lab (FSUCML) seeks an OPS Algae Technician to support the production and maintenance of micro-algae used as feedstock for shellfish (primarily oysters) and other invertebrates at the FSUCML Research Hatchery. This role ensures a reliable and high-quality algae supply through precise culture management, strict hygiene practices, and collaboration with research staff.
Algal Culture
- Monitor algae cultures at all growth stages and follow proper scale-up procedures.
- Apply disinfection protocols and maintain strict hygiene standards in lab and production areas.
- Follow and help improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) for algae production and sanitation.
- Carry out basic laboratory tasks including sample preparation, microscope observation, and sterile technique.
Quality Control
- Perform routine water quality tests (e.g., pH, salinity, temperature).
- Ensure culture health and consistency through visual and quantitative monitoring.
- Identify early signs of contamination or abnormal growth and take corrective action.
- Support continuous improvement of production methods to meet research-quality standards.
Safety
- Safely handle and work with cleaning agents, lab reagents, and other chemicals.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
Record Keeping
- Record culture data (e.g., volumes, densities, feeding schedules) and maintain digital logs/databases.
- Provide daily and weekly reports to the Hatchery Manager; document and communicate observations.
- Attend meetings, take notes, and contribute to weekly workload planning.
Collaboration
- Work independently and coordinate tasks with hatchery and research staff.
- Adapt to changing priorities based on experimental or production needs.
- Support research trials and participate in troubleshooting efforts.
- Collaborate with researchers, students, and technicians to improve practices and experimental outcomes.
- Train new and existing staff in algae room workflows and best practices.
- Flexibility to work weekends and holidays, as needed.
Operations
- Manage inventory and assess supply needs; place orders under Hatchery Manager supervision.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate algae-related equipment.
- Identify and respond to culture issues such as contamination or growth failure.
Schedule
Schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm; full-time position.
Flexibility to work outside of normal hours, if necessary.
Qualifications
High school diploma/equivalent (or higher).
