Summer Internships in Hatchery and Aquaculture Operations

The Chris and Jennifer Lazzara Family Student Success Fund is offering two summer internships to work with the Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML). These internship positions will support interns who work with staff in the new FSUCML oyster hatchery, participating in research on oyster ecology, culture, breeding and maintenance. Successful applicants will assist hatchery staff with maintenance of adult oysters for spawning, culturing and setting larvae, and raising juveniles (spat) for research and restoration experiments. In addition to assisting with hatchery tasks, each intern is expected to help with student and faculty research projects on oyster early life history stages and conduct an individual project on some aspect of oyster reproduction.

Eligibility:

We encourage applications from recent college graduates or students currently enrolled in a BS degree from a relevant field such as biological sciences, marine science or zoology.

Schedule:

This summer internship will run from May 1st to August 30th, 2022. The typical schedule will be five days per week 8:00am to 5:00pm, but work may be needed on evenings and/or weekends. Actual period of employment and schedule are negotiable.

Financial Support:

This internship will pay $16.00/hour for 40-hour weeks during the internship period. Starting and ending dates of the internship can be negotiated. Interns who successfully complete their full internship commitment will be awarded a scholarship of $500 to assist in offsetting travel costs.

Pay Plan:

Interns will be employed as FSU OPS/temporary employees. The appointment will be for up to 4 months during the summer.
