As mentioned before, the marine lab is surrounded by some immense biodiversity. There are so many different species in the area; it can be hard to keep up! Luckily, Dr. Don Levitan (FSU Biological Science) constructed a very useful website listing the many species that can be found in and around St. Joe Bay, which is not that far away.
The sessile macroinvertebrates (sponges, tunicates, corals, and bryozoans) in Apalachee Bay make hardbottom habitats their home. Here you can find photos of the different species, which add a colorful aesthetic to the hardbottom environment.
You may think of scallops as a delectable seafood, but this colorful, active creature is much more interesting alive. Have you ever seen a scallop swim? Yes, scallops will take evasive swimming action when startled. We even have a video to show you how they do it!
