Outreach and Education Coordinator – Job ID #58683   (listed as Technician on FSU Job Board) 

The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks an enthusiastic and motivated person to work closely with their staff and faculty to promote the FSUCML research and conservation accomplishments through social media and outreach events. 

This position will assist with support and development of educational programs. The FSUCML is located about 1 hour from the Tallahassee main campus. The position will also provide outreach support to the Partnership for a Resilient Apalachicola Bay (PRAB). 

Responsibilities

  • Website maintenance - Updates website, posts news items and articles, creates new pages as needed.
  • Science communication - Works with FSUCML and PRAB leadership and researchers to generate news articles and blogs. Coordinates with FSU Communications to promote the FSUCML and PRAB initiative. Communicates science to the public in-person and via social media.
  • Social media - Maintains Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media outlets.
  • Community outreach - Organizes venues, notices, signage, printed media etc., for meetings and public workshops; organizes events such as the FSUCML annual Open House and PRAB Community meetings. Participates in outreach events throughout the area.
  • Education - Organizes educational events for K-12 students from local communities at the FSUCML and elsewhere. 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/equivalent and four years of experience; or a Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, particularly related to the dissemination of complex information to the public.
  • Must be willing and physically able to go into the field, occasionally under rigorous conditions, to obtain interviews and other information.
  • Experience with social media platforms. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Canva (or like programs) 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field, or a degree in Marine Biology.
  • Experience with K-12 educational outreach, event organization and management.
  • Experience with website and graphic design.
