Research Coordinator – Job ID# 59008- Application Period Closed

The FSU Coastal & Marine Lab (FSUCML) seeks a full-time employee to serve as a Research Coordinator in the Stewardship section at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR), located approximately 1 ½ hours southwest of Tallahassee in Eastpoint, FL.  This position will be considered an employee of FSU on detail to DEP pursuant to part II of chapter 112, Florida Statutes.

Responsibilities

This position will be located at ANERR’s headquarters in the Stewardship section, which is tasked with managing 6,800 acres of uplands and marsh in the Apalachicola Bay area. Field duties and database management of this position will fall into 1) sensitive species monitoring, 2) habitat mapping and management, and 3) public use and access on Reserve managed uplands. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and participate in the completion of resource management projects, including sea turtle nesting, shorebird protection, marsh vegetation and mangrove monitoring, photopoint monitoring, cultural resource monitoring and protection, prescribed fire, invasive species treatment, debris removal and clean-ups, living shorelines and restoration projects, state land boundaries, and public access to ANERR’s managed lands. Many project sites are remote and only accessible by boat and the candidate will be expected to trailer and drive a vessel up to 29 feet within the first year of hire; the candidate will also be asked to operate UTVs, kayaks, power tools, general field equipment with proper training. 
  • Participate in regional stewardship meeting/groups. Assist with visiting researchers, supervision of volunteers and interns, and other collaborative efforts.
  • Collect, analyze, communicate, and interpret scientific data using MS office programs, ArcGIS, FieldMaps and Survey123 applications. Assist with planning and execution of UAS and RTK surveys. Create summary reports and assist GIS Specialist with mapping efforts. Create educational materials for kiosks and brochures.
  • Participate in public outreach and reserve events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)
  • Ability to move 50 pounds and perform field work in harsh environmental field conditions. 
  • Driving and trailering boats up to 29’ in length, kayaks, UTVs, or the ability to receive this training within 12 months of employment.
  • Must have basic prescribed burning training (NWCG S130/190 and I100/200) or be willing to receive this training within 12 months of employment start. An annual moderate pack test is also required (walk 2 miles with 25 lbs. in under 30 minutes) for prescribed fire participation. Pack tests are offered annually by the agency. 
  • Must have a valid Florida or Georgia Driver's License, or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife sciences, environmental science, fisheries, GIS, natural resources, forest resources, conservation, geomatics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of natural resource management, Florida’s native biodiversity and ecosystem functions. 
  • Understanding of listed species and protection. 
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, FieldMaps, and other ESRI products. 
  • Experience with data analysis/QAQC and scientific communication. 
  • The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work independently, be self-motivated, but also be a team player, in sometimes harsh field conditions.

Anticipated Salary Range

The anticipated starting salary for this position is in the mid $40,000’s, commensurate with education and experience.
