USCG Small Boat Captain - Job ID #54910 (OPS)

Responsibilities

The position will require abilities for precise vessel maneuvering, nighttime work, and deployment of a variety of oceanographic equipment and fishing gears. Other duties include assisting marine operations in vessel maintenance and accommodating research equipment loading, hookup, and deployment. All the boat operation will take place off FSUCML, between Turkey Point and Dog Island. Cruises typically range from one to four hours in length, though longer cruises are possible. The position reports to the Marine Operations Manager. The ideal candidate will work well in a dynamic environment with middle and high school students, scientists, as well as college students from many different disciplines, including marine biology, fisheries ecology, and oceanography.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent and at least four years of relevant experience.

  • Must have at least a 25-ton masters captain's license OR a 25-ton Near-Coastal Mates license and meet US Coast Guard standards for time at sea and drug testing.
  • Work and handle the vessel at night.
  • Knowledge of field research equipment use and maintenance.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Excel and Word, or equivalent.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and have strong critical thinking and communication skills.
  • A certificate indicating completion of a CPR course from The American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or a course approved by the US Coast Guard under 10.205(h)(2)(iii).

Preferred Qualifications

-Experience with otter trawling.

-Experience with Middle and High school students.
