FSUCML Scholarship Application Requirements

The FSUCML Board of Trustees Student Research Fund 

Award

  • up to $2,500 to support research (two at this level and several up to $1,000)

Eligibility

  • Must be a student in good standing currently enrolled in a M.Sc. or Ph.D. program at Florida State University and must be actively engaged in thesis/dissertation research related to some aspect of coastal or marine ecology or conservation requiring the use of FSUCML facilities.  The intent of the award is to encourage graduate students to conduct their research at the FSUCML and to support their research costs associated with use of the laboratory.

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the study description and the importance and originality of the proposed research
  • Clear description of the applicant's need for FSUCML facilities

Application Items (all required)

  • A cover letter briefly describing the research project and use of the FSUCML facilities (1 page). 
  • Title (short and clear to non-scientists)
  • A research statement (2-3 pages—excluding tables, figures, references) that includes an introduction that clearly states the conceptual background for the research and the questions being addressed; a list of objectives; methods; preliminary or anticipated results and their significance to the body of science.
  • A budget and budget justification that includes a statement of need (i.e., why is funding not available elsewhere) and clearly details how the lab is being used (e.g., for boat use, laboratory space, experimental set ups, diving support) 
  • A curriculum vitae (include name of advisor) that provides your educational history, research experience, publications (including ‘gray literature’ contributions); presentations (including oral presentations, posters, and those presented by co-authors). 

Note:

Masters students are eligible for awards no more than two times; Ph. D. students are eligible for awards no more than three times. Students who have not expended a previous year's award are ineligible unless they have received a one time 6-month extension (submitted prior to the end of the award, which is 12 months after notification of the award) and provided adequate justification.

The Coastal and Marine Conservation Student Research Award

Award

  • Provides in-state stipend for Summer Research Assistantship and tuition at the normal departmental rate in the year of award.  The intent of the award is to encourage use of the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory.

Eligibility

  • Must be an FSUCML graduate student enrolled in a M.Sc. or Ph.D. program at Florida State University in a department within the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Must be actively engaged in thesis/dissertation research related to one of the following areas:
    • Protection and conservation of coastal and marine habitats
    • Protection of ecologically and economically important marine species; and/or
    • Sustainable fisheries.
  • Research must require the use of FSUCML facilities. 
  • Past recipients are ineligible in consecutive years

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the study description and the importance and originality of the proposed research
  • Clear description of the applicant's need for the assistantship and use of the FSUCML facilities

    • A cover letter briefly describing your research project and your research ties to the FSUCML (1 page). 
    • A research statement (2-3 pages, single spaced—excluding tables, figures, references) that includes an introduction clearly stating the conceptual background for the research and the questions being addressed, the objectives to be met, methods, preliminary or anticipated results, significance of the research, and references.
    • A curriculum vitae (include name of advisor) that provides your educational history, research experience, publications (including ‘gray literature’ contributions); presentations (including oral presentations, posters, and those presented by co-authors).
