Dr. Dean Grubbs and his graduate students have a shark they tagged off shore from the FSU Marine Lab found in south Florida.

Researchers from the FSU Coastal and Marine Lab and the University of North Florida returned to port on October 16th after completing their second research cruise aboard the Research Vessel Apalachee (and 7th overall cruise since 2011) to investigate deepsea fish communities and the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on these vulnerable and poorly studied species.

While aboard the R/V Apalachee on a deep-sea research cruise, Dr. Chip Cotton, Dr. Dean Grubbs, and their team found a 12 foot Greenland shark, a polar species, in the Gulf of Mexico.

FSUCML Dr. Dean Grubbs and research crew captured the first ever reported 12-foot Greenland shark in the Gulf of America.

Researchers from the FSU Coastal and Marine Lab and the University of North Florida returned to port on August 5th after completing the maiden extended day voyage aboard the Research Vessel Apalachee. The purpose of the trip was to study deep sea fish communities of the northern Gulf of Mexcio and examine these organisms for exposure to and metabolism of toxins that may be related to the Deepwater Horizon oil blowout.

WPBT2's Changing Seas "Creatures of the Deep" documentary will be premiered at the FSU Coastal & Marine Lab's Open House on April 20, 2013. This episode features FSUCML scientists, grad students, and technicians conducting Deep-C related research on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on deep sea creatures in the Gulf.

Karl Etters with the Tallahassee Democrat interviews FSUCML's Dr. Dean Grubbs and graduate students Cheston Peterson and Johanna Imhoff about their thoughts on the R/V APALACHEE. They are all anxious and excited to embark on its maiden research voyage in April. The R/V APALACHEE is the first of its kind in this region of the Gulf and many are anxious to get a turn.

Last Thursday Martha Dobes, FSUCML Board of Trustees Member, hosted a shindig in Atlanta to share some of the research the FSUCML is currently working on. Many of the attendees own property nearby the lab, so it was important for them to learn about what we do here. Dr. Felicia Coleman and Dr. Dean Grubbs were in attendance and gave presentations on their own research and why it is important to protect out ocean's resources.

A large number of shark species live beyond the reach of unaided humans. The environment that they regularly reside in is difficult to research and therefore little is known about these evasive sharks. In 2010, FSUCML's Dr. Dean Grubbs paired up with researcher Edd Brooks, from Cape Eleuthera Institute's (CEI) Shark Monitoring Program, and took to the waters of the Bahamas to try and unravel some of these mysteries. Dr. Grubbs discusses the effects of the BP oil spill on deep sea sharks and the challenges he faced while conducting this research because of the lack of data on marine life at these depths.
