We are celebrating Women’s History Month by highlighting six trailblazing female scientists from all over the world! Read on to learn about each woman’s contributions to modern marine science.

After a year of conducting research amidst a global pandemic, life at the FSUCML has continued to adapt, allowing new research to flourish and new faces to join our faculty and staff. The newest member of the lab is Dr. Andrew Shantz, joining the FSUCML faculty and the Apalachicola Bay System Initiative research team.

New research led by former FSUCML graduate student Jasmin Graham from Dr. Dean Grubbs’ lab sheds light on large-scale movements and migration in smalltooth sawfish, a critically endangered species.

Dr. Jeroen Ingels is editor and featured author in the new issue of Frontiers “Extreme Benthic Communities in the Age of Global Change.”

Dr. Grubbs co-authored a new paper using acoustic telemetry to describe movements of bonefish from spawning areas to adult home ranges in Andros, Bahamas. The work highlights the role marine protected areas, such as a marine national park, can play in conserving economically important species.

After more than a decade of fearless leadership and innovative thinking, Dr. Felicia Coleman has officially retired from the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML).

This week, graduate student, Aaron Ridall, lead his first sampling trip for the environmental sampling section of his Ph.D. dissertation work. His research focuses on assessing the seasonal variability in microplastics in coastal sediments and determining what effects proximity to a wastewater treatment plant has on the microplastic concentrations.

NOAA Fisheries has officially announced the final rule implementing Amendment 9 to the Fishery Management Plan for Coral and Coral Reef Resources in the Gulf of Mexico – effective November 16, 2020.

After three years of research, analysis and collaboration, Dr. Ingels and a team of international scientists have released their latest study, “Antarctic ecosystem responses following ice-shelf collapse and iceberg calving: Science review and future research."
